UVic Sorority

Why a Sorority?

Many people ask us why we want a Sorority: why don't you just become a club like the rest of the groups at the school? We have a few reasons for this:

- Sororities focus on many different aspects of post-secondary life instead of one common interest: volunteer work, fundraising, study sessions, and group activities are all things that sororities take part in.

- It promotes the leadership of young women. There are many different Executive Roles in sororities that can help girls learn more about delegation, multitasking, and responsibility.

- It provides motivation for those finding it hard to concentrate and keep their GPA up during the school year; most sororities demand mandatory study hours for all members and promote dry social activities.

- GLOs provide an excellent networking opportunity. Many Alumni go on to lead successful careers and often give members advice on school and career paths. Sometimes, Alumni can help members find jobs after graduation.

- Most importantly, a sorority is a great way to meet new friends. Many new students find it difficult to meet people especially during that first semester when they have a full course load and are adjusting to University life. Sororities have a Big Sis Lil Sis program which pairs new members up with senior members in order to provide them with guidance and knowledge about the University.
Sorority members testify that being involved in a GLO is like having a second family when you are away from home.

To our knowledge, there is no other club on campus that provides such a diverse environment.

Other Points

In the NPC guidelines for extension, Interest Groups are able to meet with Sorority groups and learn about their recruitment processes, due structures, and standard requirements; however, these presentations cannot be made until after the University Administration, the VP of Student Affairs, writes a letter of approval for the formation of GLOs on campus.  Many people have been asking us why we do not ask the NPC to make an exception and let us have the presentations before writing the letter, but if you really think about it... the answer becomes clear.

An Interest Group is allowed to choose up to 5 of these international groups to come and make presentations.  Each of these groups pays for the airfare, accomodation, food costs, and time of the members they send to make presentations.

If each of the 5 groups sends 3-5 members, can you imagine how much money that would cost these groups?
Can you imagine if they were to go to these host cities and have the Interest Group tell them that none of them were even welcome on campus?

All we can stress to you is that the NPC is not asking for a letter stating they can come take over campus, but for the approval to have GLOs form here.

Another thing to take into consideration: at anytime, if the University Officials believe that a sorority is not acting according to standards or in accordance with University Policy, they can send a notice to the NPC and have our charter revoked therefore disbanding the sorority.

What we are trying to say is that we want the chance to prove ourselves as something more positive than the media portrayed Greeks; we want the opportunity to show you that we are actually a beneficial organization, and we are asking YOU to help us do that!

By signing our petition, you are saying YES to democracy, to the freedom of assembly and association, and to choice!

By signing the opposition's petition, you are supporting slander, enforcement of media-portrayed stereotypes, and the violation of the rights of your fellow students.
